Apex Home Services multi-trade fleet covering Charlotte

Why we built Apex the way we built it

Brett Bennett founded Apex in 2012 after a decade as a Charlotte residential electrician — watching homeowners juggle 7-8 different contractors per year, every one with different quality standards, different licensing status, and different insurance coverage. The pattern was always the same: a leak in the wall meant calling a plumber, an electrician (to check for water-damaged wiring), a drywall guy, a painter, and a cleaning service over the course of three weeks.

Apex was built around three commitments: live-answer triage to the right trade on the first call, employee-only background-checked crews across every trade (no marketplace contractors, no day-labor), and one master service agreement that covers every trade with consistent quality standards. Those commitments have not changed in 14 years and they are why our property-manager portfolio has grown from 0 to 120+ active rental units.

How Apex Home Services grew

14 years of growth in Greater Charlotte metro, built entirely on referrals and repeat customers.

Founded in Charlotte

Brett Bennett launches Apex with one truck covering electrical (his trade) and handyman work. First year focus: small electrical and small handyman jobs for Myers Park and Dilworth homeowners. Goal from day one: build to multi-trade coverage.

NC E1 + first plumbing hire

Brett earns NC Electrical Class I License #E1-18203. Jorge Marquez joins as the first plumber, bringing NC Plumbing Class I credentials. Apex officially becomes a 3-trade operation (electrical + plumbing + handyman).

HVAC + painting added + COO joins

Tasha Curry joins as HVAC Master (NC H1) bringing seasonal tune-up and emergency dispatch capabilities. David Anderson joins as Lead Painter with NACE credentials. Janet Velazquez joins as COO from a Charlotte commercial-services company. Apex is now 5 trades.

NC GC license + 8-trade full coverage

Brett earns NC General Contractor License #91842 (residential, unlimited) — required to operate the GC-covered trades (painting, landscaping, handyman, cleaning, pressure washing) at the contract values we were already hitting. Landscaping, cleaning, and pressure washing teams formalized. Apex is now 8 trades.

Premium maintenance plan + property managers

Apex Premium maintenance plan launches with 22 founding members. By end of 2020: 130 subscribers. First property-manager account signed (a 24-unit rental portfolio). Property-manager account-manager model formalized under Janet.

ServiceTitan rollout + 10,000-call milestone

Janet leads a 6-month ServiceTitan rollout replacing legacy software. Cross-trade dispatch becomes fully digital with same-day multi-trade bundles. Cumulative service calls cross 10,000. 32-truck fleet operating across Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Iredell, and Gaston counties.

Anna AI receptionist goes live

VantaWeb's Anna AI takes over inbound calls 24/7 — triaging every call across 8 trades, capturing multi-trade lists at intake, and routing each line item to the right trade dispatch calendar.

Part of Charlotte, not just operating in it

Apex has been on Charlotte-area service calls long enough to remember when Ballantyne was still farmland and Mooresville was a sleepy lake town. Being local is not a marketing line — it is where Brett coaches youth football at Marion Diehl Park and where Janet volunteers with Habitat for Humanity Charlotte monthly.

Community work is practical, repeatable, and cross-trade — which makes Apex uniquely positioned to help.

Habitat for Humanity Charlotte multi-trade partner — Free multi-trade renovation work on Habitat for Humanity Charlotte client homes (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, handyman, painting). Other contractors typically handle one trade; Apex handles all of them on a single coordinated build day. 18 homes served in 2024.

Crisis Assistance Ministry annual drive — Company-wide drive every November for Crisis Assistance Ministry. 2024 drive collected 2,400 lbs of food + $7,200 cash + 850 hours of donated technician time for home repairs in low-income Charlotte households. Every employee participates.

Veterans Bridge Home cross-trade renovation — Free cross-trade renovation work (aging-in-place, electrical safety upgrades, HVAC efficiency upgrades) for veterans transitioning into Charlotte housing through Veterans Bridge Home. 6 households served annually with full multi-trade coordination.

CPCC apprenticeship across 4 trades — Eight paid apprenticeship slots per year (2 each in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and painting) in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College trades programs. 11 current Apex master-license holders came through this pipeline.

22 years in residential services — started as an electrical apprentice at 18 in Charlotte, earned NC E1 master at 27, and watched the same pattern repeat for a decade: homeowners juggling 7-8 different contractors per year because no one offered consolidated multi-trade service at a quality bar. Founded Apex in 2012 with one truck and two trades; today Apex operates 32 trucks across 8 trades. Built around three commitments: live-answer triage, employee-only crews, and one master service agreement across every trade.

14 years in multi-trade operations, joining Apex in 2016 after running ops for a Charlotte commercial-services company. Janet owns the cross-trade dispatch workflow that lets Anna route a multi-trade call to the right calendars on the first try. She introduced the property-manager account-manager model and the ServiceTitan integration that powers same-day multi-trade bundles. Lives in South Park.

19 years in residential trades, the last 8 with Apex. Derrick runs every field-side trade — recruitment, training, the apprenticeship pipeline (which has produced 11 current Apex master-license holders), and the cross-trade quality audit program. He is the reason every Apex technician arrives in a branded van with a photo ID badge regardless of trade. Based in Huntersville.

The full field team

Every Apex technician is a direct W-2 employee — no marketplace, no day-labor, no 1099 subcontractors. NC trade license numbers are verifiable at nclbgc.org and ncbeec.org.
