Why we built Desert Comfort Air the way we built it

Sam Reyes started Desert Comfort Air in 2009 after seven years inside a Phoenix-area HVAC chain — watching the same pattern repeat every June: dispatchers overwhelmed by call volume, customers told the next available appointment was four days out, and inadequately trained junior techs sent to diagnose 4-ton compressor failures they could not actually fix.

Desert Comfort Air was built around three commitments: NATE-certified technicians on every service call, written flat-rate quotes before any repair begins, and a same-day response guarantee for active no-cool emergencies during the summer. Those commitments have not changed in 17 years, and they are why our average customer is a multi-generation referral — kids buying their first houses calling the same company their parents have used since 2010.

How Desert Comfort Air grew

17 years of growth in Greater Phoenix, built on NATE-certified technicians, multi-generation referrals, and a same-day-response standard during peak cooling season.

Founded in Scottsdale

Sam Reyes launches Desert Comfort Air with two technicians and one truck out of a small shop in Scottsdale. Early focus is residential AC service and replacement. First customers come from referrals at a Paradise Valley dental office where Sam had installed the system years earlier.

NATE certification mandate

After three years of building the company, Sam establishes the policy that every service technician must hold NATE certification or be actively in the apprentice track toward it. The policy initially shrinks hiring options but builds the technical depth that defines the company today.

Trane Comfort Specialist designation

Desert Comfort Air earns Trane Comfort Specialist designation — Trane top dealer tier requiring 100% NATE-certified service staff, completed product training, and documented customer satisfaction scores. The designation enables extended 12-year warranty offerings on Trane installations.

5,000-customer milestone

Cumulative customers cross 5,000 across Maricopa County. Maria Castillo joins as Operations Director and formalizes the dispatch and on-call rotation that becomes the company same-day-response standard during peak cooling season.

Maintenance plan launch

After years of customer demand, Desert Comfort Air launches the formal three-tier maintenance plan program. Within 18 months over 2,800 customers have enrolled, providing recurring revenue and dramatically reducing emergency call volume from plan members.

A2L refrigerant transition complete

Ahead of the January 2026 federal deadline, every installer at Desert Comfort Air completes A2L refrigerant safety certification and the company transitions its installation truck inventory to support R-32 and R-454B equipment. First A2L installations begin in late 2024.

Anna AI receptionist goes live

VantaWeb Anna AI takes over inbound calls 24/7 — capturing system details, triaging gas and CO safety concerns, booking tune-ups and emergency dispatches, and routing maintenance plan enrollments. After-hours call capture goes from 38% to 99%; average call-to-booking time drops from 12 minutes to under 3.

Part of this Valley, not just operating in it

Desert Comfort Air has been on Phoenix-area roofs and in Phoenix-area attics long enough to remember when Chandler had farmland on Ray Road and Gilbert was a hay town. Being local is not a marketing line — it is where Sam kids learned to swim at the Cactus rec pool and where Maria coaches her daughter soccer team in Chandler on weekends.

Community involvement is kept practical and repeatable, not performative.

Salvation Army Cooling Center sponsor — Annual donation of cooling-center maintenance and emergency repairs across three Phoenix-area Salvation Army facilities. During heat emergencies (118°F+ forecast days), Desert Comfort Air provides free dispatch to any cooling center experiencing system failure.

St. Mary Food Bank annual drive — Company-wide food drive every November. 2024 drive collected 2,300 lbs of non-perishables. Every technician participates and the company matches employee contributions.

Habitat for Humanity Central AZ partner — Free HVAC installations on two Habitat for Humanity new-build homes per year across Maricopa County. Donated equipment sourced from manufacturer overage programs at Trane and Lennox.

Maricopa Community College apprenticeship — Three paid apprenticeship slots per year in partnership with the HVAC/Refrigeration program at GateWay Community College. Five current installers came through this pipeline.
