LVP installation in Tampa Bay — waterproof, dog-friendly, Florida-tough

LVP is the fastest-growing flooring category in America — and the dominant choice for Tampa Bay homes built on slab. The reasons: 100% waterproof construction, dramatically improved visual quality since 2018 (premium LVP is hard to distinguish from real wood at conversation distance), 20-25 year manufacturer warranties, and installed cost of $5-$8 per sq ft vs $9-$16 per sq ft for hardwood.

Tampa Bay LVP pricing (installed): builder-grade LVP (4mm, 12 mil wear layer) $4-$5 per sq ft; mid-tier LVP (5-6mm, 20 mil wear layer) $5-$7 per sq ft; premium LVP (7-8mm, 28-40 mil wear layer, attached underlayment) $6-$9 per sq ft. We exclusively install mid-tier and premium LVP — builder-grade fails too quickly for our lifetime workmanship warranty.

The Florida considerations: LVP is dimensionally stable across the humidity range, so no acclimation period (saves 3-4 days vs hardwood). LVP is waterproof, so it survives Florida storm flooding without warping. Pet-friendly construction (scratch and stain resistance) makes it the obvious choice for Tampa Bay dog households. The only LVP downside vs hardwood: no refinishing — when the wear layer wears through (typically 15-20 years), the floor is replaced.

LVP & Vinyl Plank — common questions

How long does LVP installation take?
Total project: 2-5 business days. Day 1: removal + subfloor prep. Day 2-N: install. 1,000-1,500 sq ft single-story projects: 2-3 days. 2,500-4,000 sq ft whole-house: 4-5 days. LVP installs 30-40% faster than hardwood (no acclimation, no nail-down).
Will LVP survive Florida flooding?
Yes — quality LVP is 100% waterproof and routinely survives Florida storm flooding that would destroy hardwood, laminate, or carpet. The qualifier is the subfloor: if water penetrates BELOW the LVP and gets trapped under the plank (e.g., on a concrete slab without drainage), mold can grow. We recommend a permeable vapor barrier on slab installs to allow any subfloor moisture to dry upward.
LVP vs hardwood — which is right for my home?
For slab construction, rental properties, pet households, flood-prone first floors, and homes under $500K: LVP is typically the smart choice. For homes over $750K, owner-occupied for 10+ years, and target-buyer demographics that value real wood (most Tampa Bay buyers do): hardwood typically delivers better ROI on resale. Mid-range homes ($500K-$750K) split fairly evenly — depends on the look and the budget.
Will pets scratch LVP?
Premium LVP with a 28-40 mil wear layer is highly scratch resistant — most dogs will not visibly damage it over a 10-15 year life. Cats with sharp claws can cause hairline surface scratches in mid-tier LVP (12-20 mil wear layer) but not in premium. We can show you scratch-test samples at the in-home measure if pet durability is a primary concern.
