Why we built StoneRidge the way we built it

Marcus Reid started StoneRidge in 2010 after eight years inside a Western NC remodeling firm — watching the same pattern repeat: customers sold designs that exceeded their budget by 40% with no early warning, hand-offs lost between the architect and the GC, historic homes renovated without HRC coordination or period-appropriate materials, and warranty claims fought over instead of honored.

StoneRidge was built around three commitments: design and build under one contract (one point of accountability), NARI Certified Remodeler standards on every project (the gold standard for residential remodelers), and period-appropriate craftsmanship for historic homes and mountain cabin restorations. Those commitments have not changed in 16 years and they are why our average client returns for a second project within 3-5 years.

How StoneRidge Renovations grew

16 years of growth in Western North Carolina mountain communities, built entirely on referrals and repeat customers.

Founded in Montford

Marcus Reid launches StoneRidge with a designer, a project manager, and one field carpenter out of a Montford office. Early focus is kitchen and bathroom remodels for Asheville homeowners. First clients come from neighborhood referral chains in Montford and Grove Park.

NC GC license + first whole-home

Marcus earns North Carolina General Contractor License #82194 (Unlimited classification) from NCLBGC — required for any residential remodeling project over $30,000 in NC. StoneRidge completes its first whole-home renovation (a 1925 Montford craftsman bungalow) the same year.

NARI Certified Remodeler + EPA Lead-Safe

Marcus earns NARI Certified Remodeler (CR) credentials — the gold standard for residential remodelers. StoneRidge becomes an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm (NAT-F148532). Required for any work disturbing more than 6 sq ft of paint in pre-1978 homes — essential for the Asheville historic-district market.

Anya Pham joins as Preservation Specialist

Anya Pham joins StoneRidge with NCPTT preservation training and CAPS aging-in-place credentials. Historic district renovations (Montford, Grove Park, Chestnut Hill, Albemarle Park) become a StoneRidge specialty. First HRC-approval portfolio entry: 1924 Grove Park Tudor Revival.

First $400K+ whole-home renovation

StoneRidge completes its first $400,000+ whole-home renovation — a Black Mountain 1960s mid-century rancher fully reimagined with a second-story addition, primary suite, and chef kitchen. The project becomes a portfolio anchor and drives a wave of similar inquiries.

250-project milestone + cabin specialization

Cumulative completed projects cross 250 across Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, and Transylvania counties. Beau McKenzie joins as Cabin Restoration Specialist after 18 years on Smoky Mountain log-home work. StoneRidge becomes the go-to Western NC firm for high-end cabin restoration.

Anna AI receptionist goes live

VantaWeb's Anna AI takes over inbound calls 24/7 — booking design consultations on first contact, pre-qualifying budget and timeline, routing lead-safe (RRP) calls correctly, flagging historic-district projects, and capturing insurance restoration inquiries.

Part of Asheville and Western NC, not just operating in it

StoneRidge has been on Western NC job sites long enough to remember when Lexington Avenue was an artist enclave and the River Arts District was warehouses. Being local is not a marketing line — it is where Marcus serves on the Preservation Society of Asheville board and where Anya teaches the historic-preservation workshops at AB Tech.

Community work is kept practical and skill-aligned.

Mountain Housing Opportunities partner — Free renovation of one home per year for Mountain Housing Opportunities (Western NCs Habitat-for-Humanity-equivalent). Materials donated through manufacturer partner programs (Andersen Windows, James Hardie siding, Mohawk flooring).

Preservation Society of Asheville support — StoneRidge donates 200+ work-hours annually to Preservation Society of Asheville projects — historic-cottage repair, Asheville Botanical Garden barn restoration, and emergency preservation work on at-risk historic structures.

Council on Aging of Buncombe County renovations — Free aging-in-place renovations for low-income senior homeowners through the Council on Aging of Buncombe County. 4-6 households served annually with curbless showers, grab bars, doorway widening, and accessibility upgrades.

AB Tech construction trades apprenticeship — Three paid apprenticeship slots per year in partnership with the construction trades program at A-B Tech Community College. Five current StoneRidge carpenters came through this pipeline.
