Why we built Tidewater the way we built it

Brandon Carter started Tidewater in 2014 after 8 years working under a master electrician and a journeyman plumber — watching the same pattern repeat: homeowners with five small jobs on a list calling national franchises that wouldn't book under $500, getting routed to marketplace handymen who took the job and disappeared, or hiring a specialty trade for a $95 fix and paying a $250 minimum.

Tidewater was built around three commitments: live-answer the phone (no voicemail, no callback queue), flat-rate price every common job (no surprise hourly bills), and never take a job that should go to a specialty trade (electrician for panel work, plumber for main line). Those commitments have not changed in 12 years and they are why our maintenance plan customer base grew from 4 (in 2015) to 340+ today.

How Tidewater Handyman Co grew

12 years of growth in Greater Richmond, built entirely on referrals and repeat customers.

Founded in the Fan

Brandon Carter launches Tidewater Handyman Co with one truck, a Husky toolbox, and an office in his Fan-district garage. First customers come from a single-page Craigslist ad and word-of-mouth referrals from his old electrical-apprentice supervisor. First-year revenue: $52,000.

VA Class C Contractor license

Brandon earns Virginia Class C Contractor License #2705-184231 from VA DPOR — required for contracts over Virginia's $1,000 handyman exemption. Lets Tidewater take larger multi-task visits and start serving property manager accounts.

First employee hired + Jobber rolled out

Tyler Jenkins joins as the first W-2 employee — no more sub-contracted help. Megan Davis joins as Operations Manager and rolls out Jobber for scheduling, dispatching, invoicing, and customer history. This is when Tidewater becomes a real company instead of a one-truck operation.

Maintenance Plan launched

The Tidewater Maintenance Plan — quarterly 4-hour visit + priority booking + 10% off — launches with 12 founding members. Megan owns the program. By end of 2019: 47 active subscribers and an MRR foundation that smooths out seasonality.

Property manager contracts + crew expansion

Tidewater wins recurring contracts with three Richmond-area property managers covering 200+ rental units. Crew expands to 6 full-time technicians plus Mac McAllister as Lead Handyman + Trainer. Each property manager unit becomes a maintenance plan equivalent.

NARI member + 3,000-repair milestone

Tidewater joins the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (Virginia chapter). Cumulative completed repairs cross 3,000. Brandon earns the EPA Lead-Safe Renovator credential — required for pre-1978 homes (much of the Fan, Church Hill, Northside).

Anna AI receptionist goes live

VantaWeb's Anna AI takes over inbound calls 24/7 — flat-rate pricing 30+ common jobs at intake, triaging multi-trade scope, capturing photo evidence, and booking directly into Jobber. After-hours booking goes from 18% to 99%. Average call-to-visit time drops from 6 days to 3.5.

Part of Richmond, not just operating in it

Brandon grew up in Mechanicsville, did his apprentice years in the Fan, and now coaches youth baseball at Bryan Park. Being local is not a marketing line — it is where Mac knows which Fan-district homes still have plaster walls and Tyler knows which Short Pump subdivisions used cheap pre-2008 hardware.

Community work is kept practical and repeatable.

Senior Connections of Greater Richmond — free safety visits — Free annual home-safety walk for low-income senior homeowners through Senior Connections — grab bars installed, smoke detector batteries replaced, weatherstripping checked, fall-risk fixes made. 24 households served in 2024.

16 years in the trades — started as a residential carpenter apprentice at 19, worked under a master electrician and a journeyman plumber for the next 8 years, and founded Tidewater Handyman Co in 2014 with one truck, one toolbox, and a deep frustration about how badly small-job customers were being served by national franchises. Tidewater was built around three commitments: live-answer the phone, flat-rate price every common job, and never take a job that should go to a specialty trade. Lives in the Fan with his wife and two daughters.

11 years in field-service operations, joining Tidewater in 2017 after running operations for a Richmond HVAC company. Megan owns the scheduling, the Jobber integration, the maintenance plan customer base (now 340+ active subscribers), and the technician training program. She is the reason every Tidewater technician arrives in a branded van, in a branded uniform, with a photo ID badge — the operational standard that wins property manager contracts. Lives in Glen Allen.
