Small Plumbing & Electrical Fixes

Small plumbing + electrical fixes — handyman scope, honest scope routing

Faucet swap, running toilet repair, garbage disposal install, outlet and switch replacement, light fixture and ceiling fan install. The small jobs that don't need a specialty trade — and the honest scope routing when they do.

Small plumbing + electrical fixes — handyman scope, honest scope routing

Small plumbing and small electrical are the two highest-margin handyman categories — and the two most-abused by marketplace handymen who take jobs they shouldn't. The honest scope boundary matters: a kitchen faucet swap is handyman work; a water heater install is plumber work. A light fixture swap is handyman work; a new circuit is electrician work.

Plumbing IN scope: faucet replacement ($175 flat plus parts), garbage disposal install ($195 flat plus parts), running toilet repair ($95-$145 depending on cause), supply line replacement ($65-$95), drain snaking up to 25 feet ($125), simple shut-off valve replacement. Out of scope: water heater install, slab leak, main line work, sewer cleanout, gas line, water softener install.

Electrical IN scope: outlet and switch replacement ($45-$85 each), light fixture install ($95-$175 depending on height/complexity), ceiling fan install ($175-$275), GFCI/AFCI troubleshooting ($95-$145), low-voltage doorbell or thermostat install. Out of scope: any panel work, new circuits, knob-and-tube removal, EV charger circuits, generator hookups, service upgrades.

When you call with an out-of-scope job, Anna routes you to one of our partner specialty trades — and we are happy to come back after the panel work is done to do the related handyman scope (mount the EV charger to the wall after the electrician runs the circuit, for example).

Small Plumbing & Electrical Fixes — common questions

Why do you refer panel work to an electrician?
Virginia code requires a licensed electrician (Class A or master electrician) for any panel work, new circuits, or service-side electrical. Handyman license (Class C in VA) does not cover that scope, and the inspection requirements differ. Hiring a handyman for panel work risks failed inspection, voided insurance, and dangerous installation. We refer to one of our 3 partner electricians.
Can you install a new circuit for a 240V appliance?
No — that requires panel work and a new circuit, which is electrician scope. We can mount the appliance to the wall, run low-voltage control wiring, and do everything around the install — but the actual circuit work goes to a licensed electrician. Same answer for EV chargers, electric water heaters, electric ranges, and generator hookups.
What about main line plumbing?
Main line work, slab leaks, water heater installs, sewer cleanouts, gas line work, and water softener installs all go to a licensed plumber. We can do everything else: fixture replacement, drain snaking up to 25 feet, supply line work, garbage disposal install, running toilet repair. Anna asks the right diagnostic questions at intake to make sure we are sending the right trade.
Do you charge a callout fee if I have you do small electrical AND a TV mount in one visit?
No — that is exactly the honey-do bundle pricing model. Multi-task visits are hourly ($95/hr with 2-hour minimum) and you pay for the time on site, not per task. Bundling 3-5 small tasks into one visit typically saves 20-30% versus booking each as a separate call.
