Drywall repair + paint touchup in Greater Richmond — invisible patches, exact color match

Drywall repair is the second-highest volume handyman job — every wall-anchor removal, every accidental doorknob hole, every cable installation leaves a hole that needs patching. The hard part is not the patch; it is making it disappear in the texture and the paint.

A small patch (under 4 inches) runs $150 flat including texture and paint match. Medium patches (4-12 inches) run $225-$375. Large patches requiring a full drywall section replacement (12 inches to 4 feet) run $400-$850 including framing if needed, mud + tape, texture, primer, and paint.

The make-or-break step is texture matching. Richmond homes have three common textures: smooth (most common in 2000s+ builds), orange peel (most common in 1980s-1990s), and knockdown (1990s-2010s). We bring all three texture sprays + a hopper gun so we can match on-site without an extra visit. Paint match is dialed in by bringing a chip to our color-matching partner (Sherwin Williams Bryan Park) for spectrophotometer-grade matching when the can on the closet shelf is empty.

Drywall Repair & Painting — common questions

How long does drywall repair take?
Small patches (under 4 inches): single visit, 2-3 hours including paint dry time. Medium patches (4-12 inches): single visit, 3-5 hours. Large section replacement: 2 visits — first visit installs and tapes, second visit (48-72 hours later) does final coat + texture + paint after the mud cures.
Can you match my existing paint color if I do not have the can?
Yes — we bring a chip of your existing wall (a small invisible cut from inside the patch area) to Sherwin Williams Bryan Park for spectrophotometer color matching. Match is typically within 2-3% of the original color, which is closer than a fresh can of the same SKU from a different batch. $25 add-on for color matching.
What about water-damaged drywall?
Water-damaged drywall must be cut out and replaced — patching over water damage fails and the mold spreads. We cut the affected section, check the framing for moisture, replace the drywall, tape + mud + texture, and paint. Important: we DO NOT remediate active leaks. The water source must be fixed before we install the patch — that goes to a plumber or roofer.
Do you do whole-room repainting?
Yes for single-room repaints (8-12 hours hourly). For whole-house exterior or full-house interior repaints we refer you to a dedicated paint contractor — that is a specialty crew, not a handyman scope. Drywall + paint touchup combined with the patch IS our scope.
